PBDG at the Kickback Pinball Cafe

anna-newman-kickback-cafe3During my visit to the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival for a screening of Pinball Donut Girl, I got to visit the newly opened Kickback PInball Cafe.

kickback-cafeIt’s in the Lawrenceville neighborhood in Pittsburgh, which seems like a pretty cool neighborhood, right by Arsenal Bowl.

The space is wonderful: giant murals with space girls and robots, including a light up floor mural that is like walking onto a playfield, tables that look like pop bumpers, and lots of games, including 3 customs!

annanewman-kickback-cafe-mural

annanewman-kickback-floorBrian Holderman did all the art.  Brian is also the graphic artist on Wade Krause: Pinball Artist and designed the DVD artwork for PBDG/WK:PA.

annanewman-kickback-cafeTwo of the cafe’s custom games I had seen before at the PAPA warehouse: Luther’s Vendetta (Brian Holderman) and Freak Out (Mike Budai).

I hadn’t seen Silver Bullet in person yet.  Super cool.  I even bought a tee-shirt with the backglass detail.

annanewman-sliver-bullet-detail3Lots of folks visted the cafe, hung out, played the games and had (good) coffee and food. I had a great salad. I know, I know! but I’m from California, ok? and I can’t help myself.  Plus I had to balance some huge meatball hoagies, etc.

So make your way to Pittsburgh and check out Kickback and Brian’s art — he has murals around town too. An arcade with more games is opening upstairs at Kickback soon.

annanewman-brian-holderman-kickback-muralAnd catch the Andy Warhol Museum while you are in town — it’s great. This was my second time and there was a ton new to see. Lurve that place.

Anna and AndyPS:  Brian and I are talking about a limited run print of the DVD art for Wade Krause: Pinball Artist.  I’ll keep you posted about that project….

Pittsburgh Pinball Donut Girl this weekend

anna-newman-pittsburgh-skylineThis weekend June 15-16 I’ll be in Pittsburgh for the screening of Pinball Donut Girl at the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival. When I talked to Ron Quigley who runs the festival (and also created this cool dolly), he was surprised I would be able to come out. I explained that Pittsburgh was key to making Pinball Donut Girl happen, and also Wade Krause: Pinball Artist. I have to go!

pittsburgh-independent-ffPinball Donut Girl is playing on Saturday at 4:30 PM along with a lot of other cool films.  Get your tickets and come join the fun!

Pittsburgh is also the home of artist Brian Holderman (below with Wade).

Wade with Luther's Vendetta artist Brian HoldermanIn addition to epic murals, Brian did all the graphics for Wade Krause: Pinball Artist and he has designed the packaging and created original art for the PBDG/WK:PA DVD.

DVD-Pinball-Donut-GirlI bet you’ve caught on already — the first DVD press is going to be a double featurette.  So those of you who donated at that level will be getting both films! Yay!

If you can’t make Pittsburgh this weekend, Pinball Donut Girl will also be showing at Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN in August.  I heard a rumor Jeri Ellsworth might be attending….

Come hang out with me and Harrison…

Apparently Harrison Ford heard that Wade Krause: Pinball Artist will be playing at Cinequest in San Jose in a couple weeks, and decided to attend.

harrison-ford-cinequest

Seriously, there are ton of interesting events at Cinequest, including a live talk with Harrison Ford, who is being given an award. Consider coming to more of the festival than just the screenings of Wade Krause: Pinball Artist.

Everyone is on the Nice List at PBDG!

pbdg-posters-xmasHappy Holidays!  If you donated at the $50 or more level, there is an original limited edition Pinball Donut Girl poster making its way toward you.  The first batch went out this weekend, so watch for Santa in the guise of a mailman, delivering at your door.

I’m hoping to start getting letters in my mailbox too, letters from festivals saying we have been accepted.  If any of you have a film festival in your area, especially one that you regularly attend and know people at, mail me and I’ll see if I can submit to them so there is a screening in your area.

In the meantime, our sound editor Josh Wolfer of Austin is working on the director’s cut so I can wrap up the DVD and get that out to you in early spring as well.

Visiting the Exploratorium — best Thanksgiving trip

This year I’m thankful for a chance to see the Visible Pinball machine in its new home at the Exploratorium. Visiting his awesome San Francisco science museum was the perfect end to a long Thanksgiving weekend. Kids and adults were playing pinball nonstop, so excited to see the game.  Wade and the Pacific Pinball Museum created a gift to the city and beyond when they made this machine.

surf champ pinball machineExploratorium will be moving to a new home at Pier 15 in San Francisco this spring — I can’t wait to see the magic they make in an expanded space. Based on the huge interest and enjoyment I saw with the exhibit, I hope more museums buy clear pinball machines for their visitors.

Mark got to play Cactus Canyon Continued — a CC game running with P-ROC, a cool board that lets you mod pinball games via a pc over usb.  Mark reports:

“In our repair room, we have a Cactus Canyon, running custom software on a P-ROC controller and a PC. The new custom version, dubbed Cactus Canyon Continued, is programmed and overlaid on top of the original. The pic shows the CCC software creator on the left, and the P-ROC hardware guys, center and right.”

“The P-ROC version has many new features, including a mode called Drunk Multiball, best played by crossing your arms, since the flipper buttons are reversed.”
